De-Jred - Skokie, IL

Lake County doesn't have any Jamaican/Carribbean restaurants. However, this much overlooked cuisine can be found down the street in Skokie. It's a clean little ma and pa kinda place. But, when we were there for lunch, pa was the only employee there. The Rastafarian was host, waiter, cook, dishwasher and cashier.

The menu isn't large, but it includes all the Jamaican staples such as: Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken, Curry Goat, Brown Stew Goat, Ackee & Saltfish, (A Jamaican national dish) Tripe and Beans, Oxtails and Butterbeans, Escoveitched Fish, Cowfoot and beans, and Curried Shrimp. Each meal comes with your choice of three: White rice, rice & Peas, fried plantains, steamed cabbage. We had the Jerk Chicken. It was excellent.

We also enjoyed the bottled sauces that were on the table. Jamaican Pickapeppa is a long time favorite. Marie Sharps Comatose Level Hot Sauce from Belize really does heat things up. Closed Mondays.
